One of the most exciting current developments in gaming technology in my eyes has to be Augmented Reality (AR). The possibilities this technology provides developers are endless and although AR is still in a fairly primitive state I believe that development of the technology is going to accelerate very quickly over the next 5 years. For those of you that don’t know what Augmented Reality is, the simplest way to define it is that it is where a virtual environment is combined or placed over a real world environment to deliver a single reality which we call Augmented Reality. A good example of this is in Terminator 2 where Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator has augmented vision where he can see the real world around him but also has various different scans and data being presented around the real world objects. Another example I’ve given in the past is that with Augmented Reality in theory you could walk down a busy street with real world people and virtual characters from Star Wars or Lord of the Rings looking through shop windows or climbing up lampposts.

Augmented Reality is currently being developed because of its usefulness in everyday life, imagine you’re someone with a very busy and hectic lifestyle, with Augmented Reality you could have a device built in to your prescription spectacles that allows you to walk to work or catch a train whilst accessing your emails and surfing the internet viewing all this through your the spectacle lenses. Obviously Augmented Reality has much greater uses and can be used in just about any scenario but what really interests me is when you apply AR to the gaming industry. I’ve recently written an article about the development of AR contact lenses, imagine as a gamer going to a local forest, quarry, beach or just about anywhere on your own or with friends and being able to play a first person shooter with real world surroundings wearing these AR lenses. In theory you could be playing a game like Halo and have crazy alien characters jumping out from behind real world trees and buildings firing lasers and throwing grenades at you. Augmented Reality could even reach a state where it is able to enhance and alter the appearance of the real world around you to make it look for example like the world of Pandora from James Cameron’s recent blockbuster hit film Avatar. To be able to walk around a beautifully enhanced version of an area that doesn’t really hold any interesting features in the real world would be incredible and people could escape into their own utopia whilst for example sitting on a bus. The possibilities with this technology really are endless and not just in gaming.

Augmented Reality as a concept really does start to become interesting when you combine it with other technologies. As we’ve seen from demonstrations of Xbox’s upcoming innovation Project Natal voice recognition technology has come on leaps and bounds and is starting to be applied effectively to video games. Although voice recognition has been used in the past it has been clumsy and frustrating to work with and now we’re really starting to see the human voice become a feasible control option. If we were to combine voice and facial recognition with Augmented Reality it is easy to see the potential that Augmented Reality has to providing an immersive gaming experience within a real world environment. With this combination of technologies you could in theory be able to have two way communication with high definition computer generated characters within your augmented world opening up a whole new avenue of potential in how we play games. I like to think of the experience as something similar to paintball shooting. Paintball shooting in essence is a role playing activity as the people involved in a game are recreating a scenario you would find in warfare. Augmented Reality can provide a similar experience without the need for paintballs and safety gear and instead of shooting real people you could be shooting real people and virtual characters with virtual ammunition. You’d probably still need some kind of gun controller in the example of a first person shooter but it wouldn’t fire any ammunition in the real world, just the augmented environment.
Obviously this is all conjecture and most of what we write on this site is. I imagine this idea would work by connecting the AR lenses wirelessly to a portable console (possibly built into your mobile phone as we are talking about the future here) and obviously you would have audio delivered to a pair of wireless or bluetooth headphones that also provided a built in microphone for communicating with the virtual and real world characters.

In recent years video games have received a great deal of bad press in terms of how it is believed they help prevent the social, physical and mental development of young people and in some cases you would have to agree that this is true. The thing I love most about the potential with Augmented Reality is that it will mean young people will be outdoors more, socialising with friends, learning the importance of teambuilding, exercising and basically developing the skills and experience that are required later in life. The truth is Augmented Reality could be used everywhere to help make life easier and to improve the quality of life, we will probably see it in education, healthcare, security, design, manufacturing, sales, teambuilding and the list goes on endlessly. Augmented Reality clearly has unlimited potential and I hope some of the possible developments I have outlined in this article will come to fruition along with millions of others, but I guess time will tell. Please leave your own ideas, comments, thoughts and suggestions on how you could picture this technology changing the video game industry or of course whether you disagree with my ideas and believe AR is unlikely to become mainstream .

Sony have announced today that they have pushed back the release of their new motion controller to Autumn. This means that the new control system will be released around the same time as Microsoft’s Project Natal for the Xbox 360 largely taking away their first-to-market advantage. It seems that Sony are making a habit of delaying their releases having also just announced a further delay to the release of the highly anticipated Gran Turismo 5. This delay is likely to anger Playstation 3 fans as many are starting to lose patience with Sony.

As someone that is passionate about the video game industry and the technological advancement of video games I often wonder about what the future holds for the global gaming community. With an endless list of options and possibilities the truth is the industry could go in any direction. I have written on this blog recently about Virtual Reality, its applications and limitations and I truly believe that Virtual Reality is where the video game industry is naturally heading. Gamers are looking for a more immersive experience when it comes to gaming, this is evident with releases from the three game giants Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony in the form of the Wiimote, Project Natal and the Sony Motion Controller (yet to be officially named). I believe these control systems are just the beginning in the industry’s quest for a fully immersive video game experience and we can expect some much larger developments in the future. Our desire for an immersive gaming experience comes from an inner need to escape from the stress and worries of the real world and the need to spice up our lives with adventure, video games can provide that and I believe will provide that.

Although Virtual Reality isn’t a new technology I believe it will produce a revolution in the gaming industry and provide a whole new era of development. The reason we’re not seeing it emerge in the market yet is down to the enormous cost to implement the technology and for this reason I believe that video game arcades will experience a revival. Even in the future the cost of Virtual Reality will obviously reduce but the price will still be significant so it is unlikely we’ll see a full home application for Virtual Reality for some time. I believe this will result in what I like to call the VRcade (probably not an original name), a video game arcade arranged in booths kitted out with all the equipment required for an immersive gaming experience where the customers pay per hour to use a Virtual Reality simulation booth. Imagine combining technologies such as the omni-directional treadmill, voice recognition, motion sensors and Virtual Reality and applying them to a VR booth in the conceptual VRcade. You’d have almost a fully immersive gaming experience where you could walk, run or crawl in a virtual environment and be able to speak and interact with computer generated characters. You could even interact and talk with real life characters in the virtual environment by networking the VR booths.

This concept may seem generations away but just by looking at Xbox’s upcoming control system Project Natal you can see that already many of the technologies required for the virtual reality experience are there. Voice recognition has been developed to an advanced stage, motion sensor technology is now highly advanced and computer graphics have reached a stage where they’re close to photorealism. It again comes down to cost of implementation and the amount of time and money it would take to develop a new gaming platform of this magnitude and apply it to video game arcades. It would be a big gamble to take a project of this description on and this gaming experience obviously wouldn’t be available to everyone as the VRcades would have to be located in areas with a high population density to be profitable.

It is highly unlikely that we’ll see anything like this being developed in the immediate future but I believe VR technology will be the saving grace of the video game arcade and will provide an experience far superior to the one you’re able to get from a home console or computer. Eventually I’m sure VR will fully integrate itself into the home and advancements in technology will provide an experience similar to the VRcade but I imagine a fully immersive VR system for the home is decades away and that is a whole different article to write. I shall be keeping a close eye on VR technology and technologies that can be applied to VR as I’m almost certain that VR is the inevitable future for the video game industry.

It has been rumoured for a while now that SEGA would move into the online gambling industry but it is now official after SEGA released a press release yesterday stating that segacasino.com and segapoker.com will be going ahead with additional gambling sites potentially arriving later in 2010. This move is likely to come under heavy criticism as a large portion of SEGA’s target demographic are under the legal gambling age and many will see this as a move to plant the gambling seed early in the minds of their young audience. This new avenue of business is likely to make a huge amount of money for the company, could we see these profits invested in a new console? Well I certainly think its about time.

It would appear that a name for the new Sony Motion Controller set to be released this spring has been leaked. The controller that was previously referred to as “Gem” is set to be named “Arc” although Sony are refusing to comment on this rumour. The new motion controller from Sony is part of their big plan to extend the lifespan of the Playstation 3 and are hoping to keep up with rivals Nintendo and Xbox with their latest innovation.

Check out the list here. We’ll be keeping a close eye on all the cool new stuff that is likely to be announced at E3 and we’ll keep you updated. Last year E3 pulled in over 40,000 visitors and had over 200 exhibitors and is one of the big game industry events of the year. Should be great.

In September 2009 the Quest to Learn school in New York opened its doors to 72 students all within the 6th to 12th grade age range and the unique thing about this school is that it uses video games as a platform for learning. On their website www.q2l.org they say that the school is “Designed to support the digital lives of young people and their capacity for learning, Quest to Learn is a school committed to graduating strong, engaged, literate citizens of a globally networked world”. Quest to Learn believe they have an advantage over conventional schools, Katie Salen the Executive Director of Design for Quest to Learn says “Games are exceptionally good at engaging kids, they drop kids into complex problems where they fail and fail, but they try again and again”. Quest to Learn is the result of three years hard work and the project is currently being funded by the MacArthur Foundation.

I believe that this is a very interesting concept and if this way of learning is proven successful it could change or at least offer an interesting set of options for schools all round the world. At the age these young people are, combining education with video games seems like a great solution to extending their attention spans. What I also like about this project is the way they aren’t throwing out conventional methods of learning all together they are simply using the technology available to them to enhance the learning experience and allowing the students to take a practical hands-on approach through video game technology. It’ll be interesting to see how the students perform as they have to take New York’s standardised tests like everyone else in the state but I predict that you’ll see these young people excel.

Although there is currently very little known about the Apple Tablet and Gizmodo.com today reported on what they believe the Tablet will be capable of in terms of gaming. Gizmodo stated “Because the tablet’s not a phone, both in terms of computing capability and input mechanics, people are going to be expecting more from its performance. Especially in the gaming realm, which Apple has been pushing hard in their ads for the iPod Touch and iPhone.” Although this is only conjecture from the guys over at Gizmodo we’re inclined to agree as Apple are going to need some strong selling points for the tablet which is likely to come with a tasty price tag. It will be interesting to see how this story develops as I’m sure you tech hungry gamers are looking forward to seeing how the new innovation from Apple will perform with your much loved gaming titles. We certainly are.

It has been announced that live streaming of sport events in the US through ESPN will soon be available on Xbox live. Old sports content is currently available through Netflix but with ESPN live streaming Xbox look to take their live service to a new level. It is believed that the service will be subscription based just like their TV broadcast and could be a major blow for cable. This is no doubt one of Microsoft’s strategies for prolonging the life of the Xbox 360 and it would probably be safe to assume that we’ll see similar services introduced to the Xbox 360 in the near future.
